Dr. Vijay Viswanathan is the head of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Research, Education and Training in Diabetes in Tamil Nadu, India. He is also the Chief Diabetologist at the Centre. He has organized five international conferences about diabetes foot care and has trained more than 2,000 physicians in preventing amputations related to diabetes. Dr. Vijay Viswanathan has published more than 150 articles in peer-reviewed international and national journals on the topics of kidney disease and amputations as they related to diabetes.
He received his MD in Internal Medicine and was awarded the gold medal during his final examination. He was awarded the PhD in Medicine at the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Madras, in Tamil Nadu, India, on the study of diabetic neuropathy in type 2 diabetes. From the API, he received the Boehringer Knoll Junior Lectureship in Diabetes in 1995, Dr.J.N. Berry Award for other specialities in 1997. Hoechst Senior Lectureship in Diabetes in 2005, Dr.B.R.Sengupta Oration Gold Medal in 2006 from API(West Bengal). He was appointed to adjunct professor at the university in 2010.
Dr. Vijay Viswanathan is the secretary of the Diabetic Foot Society of India. The American Diabetes Association conferred the Vivian Fonseca Scholar Award for the first time to him for his study on Diabetes and Tuberculosis and he received this honour at the Association's 73rd Scientific Sessions, which took place from June 21-25, 2013 at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago, USA.
